The Point of It All
The Point of It All is unquestionably Washington, D.C.'s premier needlepoint shop. Known throughout the country for its sophisticated selection of hand-painted canvases, expert service and unparalleled finishing expertise, this store has it all.

They carry all your favorite needlepoint artists. Looking for the latest designs by JP Needlepoint, Melissa Shirley or Clara Wells? You'll find them in stock. Searching for a special canvas? Point of it All logo

The Point of It All offers classes for children and adults of all skill levels as well as consultations on needlepoint restoration. They also have a thriving on-line/mail-order business, shipping canvases, thread and needlepoint accessories to happy customers across the country. And once you're finished stitching, they'll turn your piece into a magnificent pillow, beautiful wall hanging or a fabulous purse. Their finishing expertise rivals the best anywhere.

The store's owner, Susan Battle, grew up in McLean, Virginia, only a few miles from the nation's capital. She began stitching early in life. As the story goes, it was nearly Christmas and her mother had not finished her Christmas stocking. Susan, then only seven, told her mother, "I'll learn to needlepoint and finish the stocking for you." Well, her mother finished the stocking in time, but she also introduced Susan to Hyla Hurley, then owner of The Point of It All, who taught Susan to stitch. All three still find it amusing that her mother's unfinished Christmas stocking eventually led to Susan owning Washington's finest needlepoint shop.
An avid needlepoint enthusiast throughout high school, Susan put aside her needles long enough to earn a degree in art history at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, she worked in public relations for the Corcoran Gallery of Art and later The Smithsonian American Art Museum, both in Washington, D.C. Over the years Susan remained a loyal customer of The Point of It All and a close friend of its owner.

Hyla offered to sell her shop in 2007, shortly after Susan married her husband, Chris, a pharmaceutical researcher. "Hyla knew I always wanted to own my own business," says Susan. "I love going to work in the morning! It's exciting to open the door, knowing that I'm working for myself. I really enjoy sharing my passion for needlepoint with my customers.

"Needlepoint is no longer just grandmother's old pillows," she says with a smile. "In fact it can be quite trendy, even hip. I've stitched everything from a leopard purse with red leather trim to snazzy bracelets and fabulous needlepoint shoes!"

Susan is quite adept at handling the nuts and bolts of store ownership. She loves interacting with customers, working with her employees, and overseeing the store's day-to-day operation. Susan loves every facet of her business, and it shows! Her store is one of the best anywhere in the country.
